Victoria Literacy Connection (VLC)

My time volunteering with Victoria Literacy Connection was influential in my learning because this was an opportunity for me help students with their literacy skills. Though I was only there for a season my time volunteering was impactful on my decsion to become an educator. Twice a week for an hour I held virtual turtoring sessions with groups of students ages 9-11 to help them work on their reading and comprehension skills. I would pick a book that fit the level the students were at and we would take turns reading the book. After this we would answer the reading comprehension questions and often we made it into a game. I felt that I connected with the students and felt inspired seeing their confidence grows along with their reading skills. This was a pivotal experience for me because it made me realize that I am really passionate about literacy and really enjoy reading with students.
Victoria Curling Clube – VCC

Here are a couple of pictures from and extra curricular activity that I ended up trying a couple years ago. I joined a recreational curling team while living in Victoria and played on this team for 2 years. This was a great learning experience for me because I never had curled before but wanted to try something new and learn a new skills. In addition to learning new skill I made some great friends and gained a sense of community. The curling community is very welcoming and fun and this experience was great because I was able to participate in hobby that was outside of what I would normally do. Now living in Kamloops I am hoping to join a team next year! This is significant to my ePortfolio because I think that it shows that you can join a club or learn a new skill at any point in your life and that we are lifelong learners.
Training to Run a 10km
Currently I am training to run my first 10km this spring. I have been a passionate runner but I have never run in a race before. This April I signed up to run Boogie the Bridge with a couple of friends. At the start of 2025 I made the resolution to run more consistently and signed up to join a running event to motivate myself to continue to train. This is important to my teaching and learning journey because training to run is not always something that you’ll feel motivated to do. But to improve and to be able to run you need to train even when you don’t feel like it. This is an important lesson because training for a run is like learning in the way that it takes patience and time. You need to keep going and keep trying and you’ll make progress!
